Curriculum Updates for December

Math
In Math, we are almost finished our Data Management Unit.  We have been creating survey questions, conducting surveys, displaying our data on graphs (pictographs, bar graphs, and line plots). We are also looking at other graphs and asking questions and writing true statements about the data presented.  Next week on Friday, December 9th there will be a Show What You Know for this unit.  Our next unit will be 2-Dimensional shapes!

Language
In Writing, we have been learning about different genres like Mystery, Fairy Tales, Adventure, and Science Fiction.  We have read many different books to understand how each genre is different from others.  Then we are going to create a narrative in the genre we like the best.

Science
In Science, we have finished our Movement Unit and started a new unit all about Liquids and Solids.  We will be doing many experiments to understand the characteristics of liquids and solids.

Health
In Health, we are beginning our unit on Healthy Eating and about the four food groups – Fruits and Vegetables, Meat and Alternatives, Dairy Products, and Grains.

Winter Electives

Dear Parents:

We are in need parent volunteers to help with supervision of our Winter Electives at the Aurora Dome on Tuesday, January 10th, and on Monday, January 16th.  Parents will not be supervising a set group of students.  Instead, parents will be supervising a set station alongside school staff, as our students rotate through.  If you are able to assist on both days, please email Mrs. Vian at lindsay.vian@yrdsb.ca.  Please note that since volunteers will be working with groups of students, they must have a Vulnerable Sector Check completed through the York Region Police well in advance of the trip.  A Vulnerable Sector Check form can be picked up from our school’s office.
